Carrie Underwood is getting recognized for her charitable efforts.  The singer is this year's recipient of the Country Radio Broadcasters Artist Humanitarian Award.

She tells Nashville's "Tennessean" she's particularly interested in helping children and animals, because "they need us."  She explains that "they haven't made any wrong decisions in their lives" and "haven't done anything to anyone that could be malicious," so "it's our jobs to take care of them."

In addition to supporting other organizations -- like her $1 million donation to the American Red Cross last year -- the country star also established the C.A.T.S. Foundation in her hometown of Checotah.  C.A.T.S. stands for Checotah Animal, Town, and School.

Underwood received her award Wednesday morning during the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville.  Big & Rich's Kenny Alphin and John Rich -- last year's recipients of the honor -- made the presentation.

In giving Carrie her award, Big Kenny praised her for being "aware of the platform she’s been given" and wanting to "use it to save the world."
